But Look At You Poem by Mark Heathcote

But Look At You

The recklessly brave
they won't be enslaved
they risk their lives
day after day,
night after night.
and are fearless in flight
I wish I could say the same
I wish I could live on the edge of my seat
Fingertips clutching a window ledge
I wish I could wing walk on a biplane
Or take a giant leap
But the semantics of getting it right
Or getting it wrong, have frightened me
Beyond all belief, all along
I've tried my best to be level-headed
And sensible, utilitarian
And make do
But look at you
Living it up like a rockstar without a care.
You don't know how lucky you are.
But at least what's mine is mine
And I don't owe a dime
And I can relax in my mind
That -when I grow older
I won't be looking over my shoulder
For a wolf at the door,
Asking -for more than I can ever give again.
Oh, but look at you
The recklessly brave
Who won't be enslaved
But knows it'll soon be all over.
