Black Bird & The Glass Trapezoid Poem by Nika McGuin

Black Bird & The Glass Trapezoid

My lovely new workplace
has a glass trapezoid as its entrance
It protrudes into the room
bringing in the outside
as new clients wander in
they resemble little toy dolls
in shiny glass packaging
their little eyes, filled with wonder

There's also a black pigeon
he comes by every morning, and boldly
waddles into the trapezoid doorway
squawking loudly and imprudently
sometimes even pecking at the glass door;
its a perplexing ritual to behold

Still, I cant help but wonder if this bird
was perhaps human in another life
maybe this lavish office was once his humble abode
or that of his past lover, thus he comes back every morning
in search of some lingering trace of his beloved
afterwards he leaves as swiftly - and as noisily -
as when he alighted here

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
True story: I was inspired by the comings, goings, and happenings at my new job - which does indeed have a trapezoid shaped entranceway.

I love this poem! It shows that the magic of things comes from closely observing the most ordinary details until suddenly you see the significance. It's like Saul's experience of Light on the Road to Damascus which makes him a new man - Paul. You were watching the bird out of curiosity but suddenly realized you were witnessing a Love Story! You do not oversell the Love Theme, but put the notion in our heads and let it grow inside. Wise move!

I too have a couple of pigeons coming to our yard every morning! They are so friendly! At times I throw some grains to them! I have a vague feeling that they presage some good omen! If they do not turn up as usual, I grow a little restless and an anxiety sets in my mind thinking that he day is not going to be fine. I know i is irrational.... Still...! I can so well relate to your love for for this bird! Enjoyed your conjectures on the purpose of its visit!
