Black As Coal Poem by Leria Hawkins

Black As Coal

Date: November 12,2019

The moon is cold and waning
My stars have gone adrift
Seems the light that warmed me
Has faded into mist
The skies are dark and empty
Or is it just my heart
That searches lost and lonely
For voices in the dark
Night songs flamed my passion
Promise filled my head
Now I wait in earnest
For whispers from the dead
I stand along a graveside
So dim and dank and still
I know the sun tomorrow
Won't spare me from this chill
I've remained here long and patient
For the turning of the tides
For again the moon to listen
To the rhythm of my sighs
Have they gone forever?
The songs that soothed my soul
And left me here forsaken
With a heart as black as coal
