Big Black Spider Poem by Shelley Williams

Big Black Spider

Rating: 5.0

The day was coming to a close
for the fearful and the weary,
preparing for a peaceful night
I saw something black and hairy.

At first I thought to myself,
'What could it possibly be? '
it moved slowly across my bed
and it was beginning to bother me.

The fan was blowing high speed
and cool air blew in my face,
I looked again with nervous eye
while it kept a steady pace.

I shouted loud, 'A spider! '
and I stumbled on the floor,
I tripped over my own feet
and in a panic ran out the door.

My daughter saw me in the hall
trembling, eyes open wide,
I warned her of the black spider
and told her not to go inside.

She thought it was ridiculous
as brave as she seemed to be,
she went inside my bedroom
ignoring cautious words from me.

A scream startled my shaky being
and I hyperventilated more,
My daughter in her own fear
had made it out the bedroom door.

We argued, who would kill it
and I decided with a twitch,
I would hit it with a shoe
if she would hit the switch.

The room was filled with silence
and I stood with shoe in hand,
I hollered for some light
and she acted on command.

I held my breath as I got closer,
ready to swing a powerful shoe,
if I didn't hit it hard enough
the smell would probably do.

The shoe went flying and I ran
my daughter not far behind,
she started laughing at me
but it wasn't funny in my mind.

She picked up the black lint
the fan blew along my bed,
threw it at me before I knew
what had suddenly hit my head.

I looked on the floor beside me
and realized it was black fluff,
the lint caused me much feeling
and the fear was bad enough.

If you think that I am stupid
you will find that you are wrong,
If I can kill a black lint spider
I am not weak, I'm rather strong.
