Be Nice Poem by Randy McClave

Be Nice

It costs nothing to be nice
That's a free price,
It doesn't cost nothing to be caring
Kindness we all should be sharing.

As the holiday season draws nearer
Try to be a bit dearer,
And with that thought in mind
Also always be gentle and kind.
When you see a person working hospitality
Show them some kindness and generosity,
And though they might get your order all wrong
With a little encouragement, help them along.
Remember, they work really weird hours
So, don't give them your scours,
They often eat on the run
And sometimes they don't eat at all since their shift begun.
They miss out on parties and get togethers
They miss out seeing their sisters and brothers,
And when you see them holding a full coffee cup
To work they have showed up.
Sometimes they are working a double shift
And though you might feel miffed,
Sometimes they can't even rest
But, they are really doing and trying their very best.
So, if the service is really slow
Don't treat them as an enemy or as a foe,
And if they don't happen to know the cost
Don't be crossed.
They might put the wrong syrup in your coffee
Maybe accidentally they gave you toffee,
Or maybe they forgot to swap your salad for chips
So, you decide to forgo their tips.
Your drink came with ice, but you ordered it without
Don't get mad and scream and shout,
Or maybe they forgot to give your drink a lid
May God forbid.

Remember, they are truly trying very hard
And sadly they must always keep up their guard,
And they might have serious stuff going on in their life
So, be nice.
