Alone Poem by Hope Wallin

Alone

I must have been born
To be alone,
Because alone is all
That I've ever known.
I don't know what to think
When you look at me.
I don't know how to show you
What I want us to be.
Look but don't touch,
That old saying goes.
I watch you walk away,
And know that you don't know.
I wish I could tell you,
I wish I had the strength,
But I don't know how to show you,
Because I'm far too weak.
I want you to look,
Deep into my eyes,
And look into my soul,
Past all the well-constructed lies.
I want you to smile at me,
And only at me,
I want us to be
What I know we could be.
But you don't smile at me,
Not in that way,
And you never speak the words
I want you so badly to say.
I must have been born
To be alone,
Because alone is all
That I've ever known.
