A Morning In The Rainforest. Poem by Geoffrey Fafard

A Morning In The Rainforest.

It is a cool rainforest morning
I Drink my hot soup silently
The dogs watch me quietly

Fig birds eat bottlebrush nectar
More afraid of each other than me
Silently we smile the birds and I

Rainforest pigeons call ghostly
Hidden in deep thoughtfulgreen
Eyes strain to see them perched high

The dogs lay motionless at my feet
Their breathing like the sound of
Bees busy collecting from forest flowers

The old tin roof sings and cracks
In the warming morning sun
Composing anessence of music

The forest is a deep mossy green
Barring yellow leaves that fall
Then another, then another on the wind

A dog barks echoing from some distance
It should be freed from its rope
Its bark would then become joyous

Clouds pregnant with rain
Pass fleeting high over hilltops
No drops will be born today

If I stay absolutely silent
Iwill hear the chatter of the forest
Talking and laughing to me

I am learning to live
With peace and silence in this forest
Its scent, advice and its company.
