A Friend Passing Poem by Tom J. Mariani

A Friend Passing

Rating: 5.0

Resting by the road
Open to the sky
Watching for the birds
And whatever else goes by

Resting by the road
Listening for the rain
Would have made better time
Except for needing the cane

It helps me to get along
Sometimes gets in my way
Just like my friend
With whom I used to share the day

A very subtle aspect of friendship stated with class. Friendship has more to do with closeness than admiration. The bond is intangible and inexplicable.

What a fine lyric write! Very nostalgic. Old friends are not replacable, but they do linger on in the landscapes of the mind. Always your friend at poemhunter, Sandra

I really like this one-an understated lyric, and the last stanza is terrific in its wry honesty about the fried who used to help the speaker get along but also sometimes got in the way. This deft, restrained, original elegy.
