Dare I Return

Please explain the last line of your note
The one in which you claimed not to gloat
Though triumph exudes from your words, and I quote
With my feet, my dear love, now do I vote

Such haughty ideas from my modest, young lover
I hope never again to hear such words uttered
Though our lives go on I still do wonder
If the passion I felt was meant for another

Out you went as quickly as you came
Certain that our passion was just a silly game
Never realizing that it was not I who was tamed
But your passion which before us did languish unclaimed

Yet you return to me now to explain your mistake
And dare me to dream and once more partake
Of pleasure and ardour and love we can make
If only my dignity I am willing to forsake

How dare you return and ask this of me
My heart aches so much I wish only to flee
Your charms are appealing, I want them, you see
But this love has been lost and never can be
