Somanathan Iyer Poems

On one day early morning
when darkness making lazy exit
walking there on the roads
hand in hand an aged couple
...

Oh! Wind! Where from you originate?
From high mountain cliffs?
Vast sandy deserts?
Wide spread seas around?
...

Wonder is the nature tender is its beauty
Blunder we render by damaging its splendor
Limits are exceeded in extracting its resources
Future is at stake deprive not the generations
...

A new shame descended on our country known for ethics and morals
Never a day goes without a report of rape committed
A hue and cry of all sorts created by media on the heels
Of a crime reported calling for futile debates and discussions
...

Merits of light better understood
If one undergoes plights in darkness
Value of wealth better understood
If one undergoes miseries of poverty
...

Surface waters swirling fast
Deep waters remain calm
Materialistic world moving fast
Spiritual souls staying calm
...

Decades three and half gone by
The last flood of the river that is no more I recall
Till then the river called NEVA if not perennial
Flowed calmly eight to ten months every year
...

Hate the caterpillar
Adore the butterfly
Ask not for reasons
Appearance only matters
...

All that wither are ripe and old
All that bloom are fresh and new
All that gloom are sick and slew
Nothing is eternal except illusion
...

A cloudy evening with chilly winds
Went for a stroll I with my pal
Beneath the hills bordering our village
Climate was beautiful surroundings wonderful
...

On a hot summer day afternoon
Bound to my village I rested under a banyan tree
A hefty figure was sitting on the other side
Going near I found him Lord Ganesa
...

Love yourself! Love thy parents! Love your siblings!
Love your neighbors! Love thy country! Love this world!
Be strong enough and healthy to protect yourself and others
Not mere a mass of landscape and terrain your country is
...

Why this hue and cry on spilled milk?
Changes are inevitable whether liked or not
To gain some thing you loose some thing
Gone are the times that remain mere memoirs
...

God is there since ages and ages the human memory knows
Distress calls and despondent prayers pulled him always
To cater our needs, Answering some appearing in Form
Discharged He the duties towards devotees and believers
...

Care never for those
moved away from you
for their own selfish ends
...

A diamond loses never its value
even if found in slush and sewage
slush and sewage will never be valued
by virtue of its hosting the diamond
...

Coming to an end a year that we lived off
Leaving some with happy memoirs
Loading some with new experiences
Making some to learn hard lessons
...

In the annals of human history
Money is the worst discovery ever made
Never money was found alone
siblings called greed and lust it came with
...

Dirt has no dearth human birth has no worth
Removed by wash appears again a new dirt
Pruned by death appears again a new birth
Birth ushers the life only to be snatched by death
...

At times I am sane
treating life as a bane
welcoming end as a boon

Power Of Money

On one day early morning
when darkness making lazy exit
walking there on the roads
hand in hand an aged couple
among themselves charting plans
in finding sources for raising funds
to meet the needs of daughter's marriage
from behind knocks them down
a speeding car exceeding limits
another turn took the killer car
racing through a road in slum
finds pleasure in running over
three sleeping boys before their hut
all in their teens and daily wagers
before halting at its palatial bungalow
the same car hits a woman cleaning the road
tossing her to other side causing the death
no witness to narrate yet signal cameras recorded it
belongs the car to a rich and powerful
behind its steering was his son with friends
in saving his son he lured an ill fated
an epitome of poverty, this man
on being offered hefty amount to his dependents
shouldered the crime thus becoming scapegoat
uncivilized ways guard the civilized society!
