You Cannot Change The Wind's Direction Poem by gershon hepner

You Cannot Change The Wind's Direction

Although you cannot change the wind's direction,
you can adjust the sails, and if you know
precisely how to make the right correction,
you may arrive where winds want you to go.

The saddest of all phrases may not be,
as some erroneously believe, 'Too late! '
It is the opposite, 'Too soon! ' which we
discover only at a later date.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Stephen Holden ('Seeking Balm for Soul in Boat Going Nowhere, ' NYT,6/1/12) reviews 'Hide Away, ' which he describes as 'a ponderous piece of allegorical kitsch about grief and healing.' The movie contains several nautical homilies, including:

'You can't change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust your sails.'
'Sometimes when you get where you're supposed to be, it's too soon.'
