Yes And No (Sonnet 24) Poem by Larry Lynn

Yes And No (Sonnet 24)

What weapons stronger, sharper than the sword
cut deeper, quickly, bloodless to the bone?
Brief utterance that cannot be ignored,
once said, "NO! " leaves one lover all alone.
Its counterpart fills lover's heart with joy,
resounding echoes, whispers, happiness -
no matter if it's silent, firm, or coy -
soft soulful, silent sighs reside in "YES! "
But silent stares and vacant eyes say more -
no answer, clear: to love, or walk away;
much less if planning peace or making war -
or love. Who knows, if lover doesn't say?
I look into your eyes and heart, I guess,
to see if no means nothing, no, or yes.
