Words Well Worth 4: Wealth Walks In To The Worthy

Rating: 5.0

Ever filled to the full with water,
Ocean never begs, pots and potter,
Soul seeks right family,
Wealth walks in to worthy—
She, worthy father's worthy daughter!

The transliteration of the subhāśhita is given below:

na udavān arthitām eti ambhobhih prapūryate |
ātmā tupātratām neyah pātram āyānti sampadah ||

Luck walks not blindly to the lucky. Lucky is one that welcomes the luck by working hard, who by nature is plucky. Ocean never begs for water. River waters walk to its shore as ocean eminently deserves it. Wealth, as Goddess Lakshmi and daughter of ocean does ditto. Only a deserving man begets wealth. Finally, migrating after death of the body, soul seeks out the right family to beget a new body.

na udavān:never an ocean, a reservoir of water; arthitām:one wanting something from others; a beggar; eti:goes; sadā:ever; always; ambhobhih:with water; prapūryate:so full of; filled to the brim; well-endowed with; ātmā:atman; soul; tu:but, too (here): pātratām:the right vessel, the quality of deserving; neyah:leads to; carries; pātram:vessel, a right receiver of charity, one that deserves; āyānti: comes to; sampadah:wealth, endowment, assets, good fortune.

Thanks for evaluating the poem for its translation quality. We all know the creator of Mahabharata, sage Vyasa was a great righter, who could summon even Lord Ganesha to scribe the verses dictated by the poet. He dictated fast, Ganesh had a great speed.... We know the story.
