Words Poem by Michael Ernst

Words

You believed in me many more times than once
And I let you down about the same amount
Neither of us have the exact number
Not in our heads, but I know your heart kept count

You believed in me when I told you 'I'll always love you'
These words forever true, in stone they are set
It's the other words I spoke too often
The one's I can't remember, the one's you can't forget

Words formed by my weakness
Lies verbalized through disease
Inflicting devastating wounds to your heart
Wounds that are hidden, hurting, no one else sees

Words we both know were lies
Not my 'real' feelings you feared to be true
Sometimes doubting yourself, or what you mean to me
After all, why would the man you love lie to you?

Hurtful words are nonreturnable
But that does not make them all true
Truth is no matter how or when I leave this earth
The last words from my lips will be 'I'll always love you'
