Why I Smile Poem by Craig Mize

Why I Smile

I remember when my life was going awry.
Everything around me was dark and,
The rain clouds wouldn't even allow
The stars to enter the pitch black sky.
A friend asked a simple question
So I replied the best way I knew how.
He asked with times so bad why smile?
I said the reason that I smile is
That I got to hold back these tears.
If they were to ever get loose
They would overflow the river Nile.
I smile to cover up the pain;
I'm camouflaged with happiness
To cover up the hurt I feel inside.
For if I can just pretend to have joy,
Just maybe I can give real joy back.
To someone that has it worst than me.
I smile because if I don't I will lose hope.
I smile because it is the one thing
That is good in life. And if I fail to smile,
I might as well bid this world goodbye.
I smile in this darkness
Just to give me a little light.
