What I Am Poem by Cookie Iwuoha

What I Am

I am a thought, housed in a shell,
a soul- holy fortress to unpiousness
a face-my confusion and conflicts perfect shield
i am an idea, conceived in the maker’s mind
who I cannot comprehend,
everyday a struggle to interpret my existence
my trials and temptations endless
verily I fight for knowledge,
lack the steam and courage
contend with truth and falsehood,
helpless against my flesh, self coup
i hunt inspiration,
seek means to quell my passions,
blinded by desire
chained to ignorance,
my only sanity, endurance

They say am “evil”
they say from the “apple”
Satan brought wisdom of my birth
they say am “sinful”
without grace of the almighty,
my righteousness equals no heaven

I am betrayal,
insincerity,
how can you trust me?
i am doubt,
confusion.
how can you believe me?
i am loneliness,
prose and poetry,
no combination beats me
i am death in a life,
war in a peace, wrong in a right
shame of a sin
there is no right in me
i am sadness, i am tears
i am darkness, i am fears,
i am courage, i am brave
i am ecstasy, i am bliss
i am you, i am me
