What A Lesson Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

What A Lesson

What a lesson

I, an ex-officer
-who carried, injured, dead
- (in blood and coffin)
-needed heart of iron
-to be firm and give help…

Yesterday, the same I,
-observing with my eye
-felt body in shiver
-when taking a picture.

Facing sun, on asphalt
-laid baby, tummy up!

Neither had power to
-do as did, long before
- (picking up, help save life)
-nor had guts to share this
-with people who passed by…

They would say: "Is clown! "

Left the thing as it was;
-no feather, its head large,
-with closed black eyes
-visible as fetus, or a child
-when still in the womb…

Engulfed was in pinkish skin-bag,
-revealing veins and bones as if it was glass,
-while covered every part of body!

Half of the mother-egg
-from which it was hatched
-was still bulged inside…

Its head was special
-yellowish around beak…
-and the mouth, a whirlpool,
-able to take and hide anything
-from hay to a whale…!

Oh, what a sparrow; baby-chick!

I thought of my mentor in Texas
- (The lady, pregnant, in the fair
-who called me "Stupid" for start;
-when I was playing game of ball
-to hit the bottles and win prize.)

She wore thick lipstick
-one those looking "Bitch! "

I ended in their house
-doors opened to my eyes:
- "USA is not a Paradise! "

Her husband worked two shifts
-and repaired the house if was free.
-The sink was a pile of dishes,
-they did not have water,
-were poor and had not paid…

"Can't finish the building and report…"
-she told me and went on:
- "…unfinished is not subject to tax…"

Then she gave me a book
-signed with a crimson lipstick.
-Book was on true life of "Eagles, "
-and she said to me, but concise:
- "They lay eggs, two at time…"

Finally, she compared USSR with US
- "They too, are copies of the eagles
-fight until one falls, dies…"

In my head parade an army of the questions:
- "What is right? What is wrong?
-Are we all equal? Is there God? Is God just?
-Should the dirty liars become peoples' leader?
-Shall the rest be fooled and enslaved?
-Has this chick, dead in sun, on asphalt
-faced the same fight for life as eagles? "
