We Were Young Poem by David Thomas

We Were Young

When we met the skies were blue
the air was thin and tasteless,
the freedoms we knew came from outside and in
our vibrant hearts painting so loudly
that people everywhere could see

As we grew together our vibrant pain turned inward
a dusty gray and dark red-brown outside,
the most wonderful rainbows on the inside
and the skies grew over with clouds light grey and white,
our harmony becoming slightly darker as we lost ourselves
to the love that we cherished.

In our prime we forgave or forgot
I do not care which was which but bygones were so,
and as we painted with our hearts what's more
the music of our souls sang louder than ever
when we gazed eye to eye the possibilities were endless
as was our loving joy

In our agedlove stances we departed ways,
the clouds grew dark with thunderous rain
i will never forget you completely no,
you are the echo of hope in my cavernous brain
the song of love so true my skin chills
and yet you are the reason my mind is silent
why there is no pitter-patter of thought,
no speaking of ease and most importantly
why i am of such grave stress

when all you used to be was everything to me,
i let you go and i know now we were wrong
distance only makes it harder
and i should have fought for you like i fought
with my fists,
then you'd be here with me
not there with him and Him,
but regret raises only fools and so I trudge on.
