Water Poem by Nibedita Phukan

Water

One

Shall I hold on to the bottle or the enamel pot
To light or darkness
Or through light or darkness shall I carve a new path for water
Shall I seep through in the form of rain
Beneath the water spinach
A school of fishlings will pass by
In the sadness-filled evenings
Spiralling down unto the heart
Of a Teltupi*
Rain will fall

Two

Clear water
By the bait just thrown
A fishling passed by
Leaves of grass are shaking
A sign of rain

*Teltupi is a kind of bird
