Ward Off The Reckless Demands!
It is good to land a listening ear
To someone genuinely in pain.
Even more wonderful is to give
A helping hand to one in need.
But to swallow the venom of
Malicious minds poured upon
Your heart and lose your own
Peace of mind is unhealthy.
Compassion is not a perfunctory
And superficial curtesy. Be genuine
In your speech and actions and strong
Enough to ward off reckless demands.

Genuineness is what defines and qualifies all our actions! Patient and sympathetic listening is a great quality. But if we listen to venomous talks and mean gossips, that will only spoil our peace of mind! So whom to listen has to be discreetly decided! Great common sense in your words!

Savita, this is the first time I have had the occasion to read your work. There is such wisdom in this one poem! Some of us feel such a need to help and listen to everyone, and in some cases it is so toxic that one feels the need to take a bath afterward, to wash off all the dirt and pollution! Sage advice in this poem of yours!
