Waiting... Poem by Richard Johnson

Waiting...

Here I stand on this balcony...

I take a pull and then take a sip

My body tries to reject it

Though my lips

Have already accepted it...

And I wait for you...

Will tonight be the night

Will you come and see me tonight...

I look in the sky cuz’ I know

You are everywhere...

But yet you’re not here...

My heart grows tired of just believing

But still feeling alone...

So I take another pull, another sip

Of this poison that I have picked...

It hurts my body but it hides the pain

At first it is hard to breathe

But slowly

Ever so slowly it becomes fluent...

At first it burns going down

But slowly

Ever so slowly it becomes smooth...

Still...

I wait for you...

Not for a sign or some shooting star

But for you...

Nothing else can quite compare...

I wait for you...

Not to carry me

But to sit awhile...

Again into the sky I gaze

Trying to make your face out

In the darkness that is called night...

Still nothing...

Still alone...

How I beg for tears

But my eyes will not give in

Never back out of the oath made so long ago...

So I fill my lungs and empty them

Fill my mouth and swallow...

This missery, this loneliness

This waiting...

Time passed becomes a butt and an empty glass...

Back to reality

Back to the loneliness of crowded rooms...

And tomorrow...

I will wait again.
