Digression... Poem by Richard Johnson

Digression...

Where were you
When I needed love…?
When my heart decided that blood was no longer enough
To keep life in these limbs…?
That moment when oxygen
No longer was all my lunges cared to breathe…
When love became necessary
Were you stuck in time?
Still somewhere in my youth…
Where children still believe in happily ever after,
One of those thoughts that time eats away
Till all that is left is dust,
Just a memory that had become a glimmer of a star
Millions of miles away,
Truly something so great
But the limitations of my human eyesight would make you seem
Almost non-existent…
Or have you been near this whole time
Overlooked or unwanted
And yet still there…
Were you there…
When my experiment to replicate you with not so much as a list of ingredients, blew up in my face
Were you there the second time…
The third…
Did you watch it all?
Did you see how many times I gave up
Only to try and create you again
And fail…
The times I sat in anguish holding my lifeless creation
In solitude…
If you had a name it’s meaning would be true love
But then would giving you a name be the same as giving you form, that form being human and there by attaining personification?
Hahaha. I digress…
Who are you?
Where are you?
Why would you forgo God’s plan for us
To be together?
Did you see me as green…
Not ripe enough for the picking
To the extent that you would return to paradise
From whence you can and I could not follow…
Well I am here…
Nothing left…
Not a promise to give
But that of being the man God has groomed me to be…
Tell the Father you are leaving,
Tell Him you’re coming down to be with me
Tell Him that I’ve finally stopped trying
Tell Him I’m on my knees…
No plans, schemes or tricks up my sleeve
I’m a man…
I’m me…
Tell Him I’m ready…
