Upon Reading Poe's Annabel Lee
.
Girls, if a man proposes marriage
upon bended knee with eager eyes
by reciting these lines about his love for you
being so deep and eternal
that he has a great willingness
to lie beside your dead body in a tomb
[your dead decaying rotting body]
you might want to
RUN! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I thank you, Soran. You and I understand young deep love. It can go Romeo-and-Juliet in a heartbeat. Hopefully he only metaphorically spent his nights sleeping beside her in the tomb but Poe really did have some psychological problems and I wouldn't put it past him to have actually slept by her. This is not healthy behavior but it did not take away his gigantic literary standing then or now.

Paul Brookes- Thank you, Paul, for coming and reading. I do have an unruly sense of humor at times!

I feel like watching a horror movie as I read this opus. But I laugh out loud instead of getting terrified😅😂🤣. A full 10....10++

I hardly find extended version of Poe's this poem. Short, sharp and highly expressive. Great job.

Geeta, thank you for 5-staring me! ! ! And thank you for joining in the spirit of the thing- -he was a fantastic poet but sometimes he seemed a bit shall we say over-melodramatic in his love-lorn poetry! Thank you, Geeta. for encouraging my...ummm... humorous side! ! ! !

Yes! That's the word " RUN" ..... " Great willingness to lie beside your dead body in a tomb......" Reading Poe's Annabel Lee does give you a weird feeling of horror. Your reaction is absolutely brilliant - a fitting finale to this poem......Ha ha ha....: Susan, this surely deserves 5 stars...... :)

Savita, Yes, his poems technically are all that poetry should be- -rhythm and rhyme, haunting textures- but some oh his " love" poetry turns me away too. I'm glad my remarks made you smile! ! . Twas my intent to have a bit of fun.

Haha that made me smile too. Sometimes poetry’s hyperboles do make us cringe and rebel when the stark realities of life speak otherwise. Poe’s poem is rather charming with its rhythm and rhyme but falls short to match our skeptical moods.
