Unlike Then Poem by Nassy Fesharaki

Unlike Then

Unlike then

Long ago when fingers
-were smart in the dark
- (of long, cold winter nights)
-when seasons meant their names
-spring brought life
-summer meant fruit, sun
-fall arrived with chill, rain
-and pressed leaves to fall
-leaving the trees for
-winter days to observe
-like porn of strippers

And the time when fingers
-knew ways and customs
-dipped dip in the mortar,
-of solid stone, carved
- set on edge found almonds,
-broke them with the tool
-itself made of stone
-around five inches long
-at both ends square
-found to act as hammer

Now stand in kitchen
-hammering the remain
-of walnuts that purchased
-no stone, with hard fist

Cannot say life advanced
-it has changed, I accept

Then rest of process
-choose kernel from shell
-mix with the mulberry
-and will have as my food
-healthy for digestion
-lungs, blood and the rest

My body is great example
-of living and dining of nature
-fruit and crops and, vegetables
