Underneath Poem by Light Kingley

Underneath

I spite you with my words,
Raise my fists, raise my voice,
I yell and fight,
Keeping you away,
Keeping you from loving me.

I hate losing you,
But I hate loving you.
So I give you my hate,
Keeping you away.
Keeping you from seeing
My broken state.

I've built up my armor,
Tried to stand tall.
Tried to believe
You were nothing at all.

I hated how I hurt you,
So I pushed you away.
Made you think
I was just this way.

I wanted you to believe
I was a worthless jerk,
That I wasn't worth your time,
And you'd be better off
Without me.

But if you cut away the layers
Of hatred and cruelty,
You might find,
Fears, hopes, dreams.
You might find,
That I'm still human.

An all too common circumstance, written with feeling and insight. Thanks, Light
