Trees Of Taiga Poem by Leanne Jarrin

Trees Of Taiga

Have you seen the Trees of Taiga
Ancient sentinels clad in snow
Arctic travelers tell of giants
Standing 'gainst the Wolf Wind howl

Once you've seen the Trees of Taiga
In your soul forever more
You are kinfolk to the winter
Warm when cold winds blow

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The Taiga is a distinct biome, a global forest that circles the Northern climes, just below the Arctic Circle, across Russia and Canada. The trees there grow incredibly slowly, only gaining a few centimeters a year if growing at all during the very short 8 week growing season. Some of those trees are hundreds of feet tall, having stood for thousands of years, maybe having started growing during the last Ice Age. Very few humans live in the Taiga and those who do survive by herding reindeer for their milk and meat and hunting wolves for their pelts.
