Sometimes I ask myself, "Where have I been? " -
What have I been searching for, so high and low?
Why have I searched for the pot of gold -
and not just settled for the rainbow?
There are treasures that I have sought -
somewhere in a distant land,
treasures that were always here -
waiting to unfold, in the palm of my hand.
In my lone illusion, life seemed to steal from me -
all the dreams that lingered deep inside,
because I looked in unknown places -
instead of looking where they did reside.
There were treasures I did not find -
and, all my searching seemed to be in vain,
treasures of joy, self-esteem, and love -
and many other treasures I could not claim.
One day it finally dawned on me -
to stop looking behind closed doors,
to stop searching in unsought seas -
and far away, as so often, I did before.
For there are treasures so very close -
that are so much a part of who I am,
the darkness and the light exist together -
that's what I needed to understand.
The purpose for which I was meant to serve -
an example of Jesus, for all to see,
that our sinfulness and weaknesses can become -
the treasure of our strength to be.
Now, I see life in a most different stride -
my goals, my purpose, and my dreams,
never to look no more beyond myself -
for treasures where they do not seem.
If I am to find the treasures I so desire -
peace, hope, friendship, and love - as a start,
grace filled from the hand of God, those treasures -
are waiting still, right here within my heart!
