This Great Lover Poem by Clyde Watanabe

This Great Lover

How do you wait so patiently
How do you wait for imperfect me
Why do you prepare the best for me
When I turn around and flee

I'd rather run away and hide
I'd rather be numb to all the pain
When my heart turns into stone
On a wayward trip alone

A dark cloud seems to follow me
I'm as ugly as can be
Why do you keep on following
When I just keep on wallowing

It would take a great big miracle
It would take incredible love
To search for and rescue me
Down and out as I can be

Dare I reach out to try and touch
Rejection just hurts so much
Why should I even try
My life's just a great big lie

Don't understand unconditionally
What do you see in my despondency
If you only knew what's in my soul
You would know my cherished goal

Unspoken and afraid to hope
For this great lover to appear
For this great lover of my soul
For this great lover to make me whole

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
It's easy to judge ourselves unworthy. I encounter it all the time with the poor and needy I serve. Negative self images are hard to overcome. God sees us differently. Just as a parent can see what their children can become, unconditional love transcends the inadequacies of our lives. No matter how wretched we feel our lives are, Jesus gave his life as the great lover of our souls, willing to give it his all to give us hope, to fill that hole in a broken heart, to heal the wound, to release the forgiveness, to give a reason to live.
