They Shot The Hunter Poem by Paul Hartal

They Shot The Hunter

The rabbit was scared of the hunter.
So one day he acquired an old used gun
for self-defence.

He was not alone.
The fox was also afraid of the hunter
and he, too, purchased a weapon,
a new semi-automatic rifle.

Although they were unbeknownst
to each other,
by a curious coincidence,
the rabbit and the fox decided
to kill the hunter in the same time.

It was the fox who fired his weapon first,
shooting the hunter through the heart.

The rabbit also pulled the trigger of his gun
but by then the hunter was already dead.

A short while later
the fox and the rabbit looked at each other
with scrutinizing eyes.
Neither of them smiled.

"Well", said the fox,
"it seems the hunter is dead.
Let's be friends".

"Now look", said the rabbit,
"I just fired my gun, but you actually
killed the hunter. And I don't want to be
the friend of a murderer."
