The Vampire Poem by Gilbert Ortega

The Vampire

Off with lamps and on with candles
Off with boots and on with sandals
Into bed til comes the morning
A storm is brewing, do take warning
Under glimmer of dark lacquered cherry
From where gargoyles stare both manic and wary
Upon a scene of dark desire
As it reflects the glowing fire
Here be dragons and there be ghosts
Furries and furies and Satan's dark host
A shadow staring up at its caster
From a floor of cupidon alabaster
The sound of hooves outside the panes
Where drops hit like pebbles as it rains
A wind that blows in from the hall
Puts out the candles on the wall
Lightning strikes, a blinding strobe
Upon the trembling nyctophobe
Footfalls come with loud persistence
As silence retreats into the distance
Sweat the sheets and shake in terror
For he is come, the darkness bearer
The vampire swoops in from the night
Screams of fright, his one delight
