The Universal Benefactors Poem by Kaki Venugopala Rao

The Universal Benefactors

Gazing at the Sun
Throwing his radiance
All over the earth,
I questioned,
'O, Sun, why don't you
Shine for yourself
And keep your light
With yourself? '
Smiling, the Sun
Said, ' I shine for the whole
Creation, my light
Is for all creatures, '
Watching the river flowing
So serenely with its sparkling
Waters, I queried,
'O, River, why do you flow,
Taking such great pains
In your long journeys?
Why don't you flow for yourself
And keep your waters for yourself',
Amused, the river answered,
'I flow for all living beings,
My waters are for them',
On my way, I noticed
A tree laden with fruits,
Looking at the fruit-bearing tree,
I shot a query at it,
'O, Tree, for whom are you
Bearing this treasure of fruits?
Why don't you keep all your fruits
For you alone? '
Laughing at me, the tree uttered,
'I am for you all,
I bear fruits on my boughs
For all humans',
Ashamed, guilt-stricken,
I mused, 'How unselfish, kind
And generous all these things
In nature are!
They offer all these boons
To humanity for no rewards,
But we, humans, are selfish,
Greedy and unkind
In our treatment of these
Supreme, loving, universal
Benefactors of nature.
