The Rag Doll Poem by Sylvia Frances Chan

The Rag Doll

The Rag Doll

I've never owned a rag doll
such a doll for fun
as a little girl I mean

I did get a homemade doll
made of rags
but never a rag doll

my dearest caring mother made such a play doll
all these years I played with the doll,
the doll remained unharmed and still in the best state,
friends who know me well, know that I don't exaggerate

when I noticed that new neighbours came to live in the neighbourhood,
and there are little girls in that new family,
I gave all my dolls and toys,
so that they can play amusingly
weeks passed, months passed
then I visited them during tea time

to my greatest shock, not one single doll survived
I got very sad and realized
that you have to get used to playing with toys and dolls,

if a child has never had toys or dolls
she has to learn to play first

for that young age of mine I learned at the same time
that a child must have the experience to play with toys

very traumatic for me for having known their tic
for so many years I still have the dolls and toys in the best state
and these girls, they had only one month of play-moments
they had only 'played' with them for one short month
and my dashing dolls and toys are no longer recognizable
all broken all non-playable

"The doll is one of the most pressing needs and at the same time one of the most charming instincts of female childhood. […] The first child continues the last doll. A little girl without a doll is about as unhappy and just as impossible as a woman without a child. (Victor Hugo)

To David Wood: If you never have toys, I do think that's according to the child normal. Indeed, David. Thank you for your response

To Freeyad Ibrahim thank you so much for your precious feedback. That case about -last doll then comes the first child, I had not thought out that far, the doll was just a play-tool for me, I never played 'the mum'

I can understand your sentiments when you saw your precious dolls turned into rags, because those were associated with your mother

Unfortunately, all do not understand the attachment to dolls. The present generation is more into electronic gadgets.

little girls who love dolls attach a lot of emotion with them. They talk to to their dolls and share all their secrets with them. It is an essential part of growing up.

Dearest Sylvia, this is such a sentimental poem. I can understand how you felt when you saw your dolls torn and tattered.
