The Promise I Made To Thee. Poem by Mal Sharp

The Promise I Made To Thee.

I have known you all your days,
And I held you when you came.
Understanding the clichés
For once, I cried without shame.

I witnessed a miracle,
Which affected me so much.
You looked so fragile, so small.
I thought you'd break at my touch.

And then you started growing,
Bigger and bigger each year.
The time it started flowing,
Bringing with it much more fear.

Now I'd have to let you go.
Out into the world alone.
Armed only with things you know.
Heading into the unknown.

No matter how big you get,
How independent you'll be,
I'll be here, I won't forget.
The promise I made to thee.
