The Poet And The Subtext Poem by GORDON GILHULY

The Poet And The Subtext

Rating: 5.0

the poet and the subtext
were walking hand in hand
an audience awaited them
and both thought that was grand
I love a public reading the erstwhile poet said
as they strolled along the strand

the presence of readers and writers
thrills me to no end
I love that play of wordy wit
on which we all depend
I just want love said subtext
oh please, please be my friend

there is no purpose greater
that sanguine poet cried
than lifting up the people
from the holes in which they hide
I just want praise sobbed subtext
before I've up and died
