The Onam Festival 2020 Poem by Parameswaran Nair Damodaran Nair

The Onam Festival 2020

Rating: 5.0

My mind is devoid of
that passion for festivity
which I used to feel
when I was a lad.
The pleasure that delighted me
from small things then
is no more felt dear to me.
When I am seated before
the delicious dishes of the feast
images of poverty-deaths
and malnutrition rush to me.
When new clothes are gifted to me
I think of those who struggle
to cover their nakedness
in old tattered rags

Fear of a dreadful death
by terrorist villainy
keeps me away from crowds.
My dreams about life
has turned to nightmares.
Where the strong is posed
to deceive and loot the meek,
where the king fiddles when
the subjects are trapped
in spreading wild fire,
where hypocrites and sadists
saddle the victory horse of peace,
where a pandemic unleashes death
how peace can lull me to sleep?
what of festivals can enchant me?

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Valsa George 06 September 2020

These are the thoughts running through the minds of all of us these days on all festive occasions! The charm of life is gone when everyone wears a 'mask'..... literal and figurative! The feeling of brotherhood is gone and poverty, deprivation and also depravity escalate. The enthusiasm in every one is dying out! Yet we have to dream of better times! A poignant write!

Thank you very much dear Valsa George. You are cent percent correct. Any celebration that falls during these days of strain and stress carries no charm. The feeling of universal fraternity has deserted human minds. People have lost enthusiasm and energy. In such condition festivals are of no meaning

The old glory of Onam festival is gone, There is no incentive to celebrate Onam. You are absolutely right, i feel the same, dear Poet. How can we ever think of celebrating when so many are poverty stricken, sick and dying. On this occasion, i pray for the well being of all. May there be peace.......10

Thank you very much dear poetess Geeta. Onam, as you know, is an occasion for enjoyment with family members and friends which the situation is barring these days. When the people are suffering from disease and povertywe cannot enjoy any celebration. Let us pray for a better morrow

Very profound poem. We all are living in under the clouds of fear. We all have become enemy to each other. The joy of celebration, over a period of time have, vanished.10++
