The Old Adage. Poem by Jak Black

The Old Adage.

Rating: 5.0

Experiences, both good and bad
Help to character define.
You'll reflect on what you learned from them
Further on along the line.

Your experiences can help another
Who swims against the tide.
But they must trust in what you say,
And not cast your words one side.

We've heard of clichéd phrases,
And of the old housewife's tale.
Some adages come from way back when,
Yet still today prevail.

Many sayings that are handed down,
From one generation to the next.
Are observations by our forefathers.
Sometimes found in religious text.

Never scoff when someone tells you
That they've seen it all before.
Words that are spoken from the heart
Are seeking your rapport.

A wise Irishman once told me
A well worn saying of his.
It often takes a long, long time
To know who a friend really is.

Friends give freely their support,
In your hour of need.
A loyal friend, a trusted friend,
Now that's a friend indeed.

And not cast your words one side.............in the colonies we (I) would say aside. i never heard? of 'cast one side'. interesting. how come we never hear of 'old househusbands' tales'? ? must be the men were too busy busting sod and chopping trees and shooting deer for the table, while the womenfolk just sat at home in front of the fire, making up tales! ! ! ? ok, upon reading more, I see “forefathers”. now the men (probably the aristocrats who inherited money or stole from the househusbands, or both) are getting their due! (some of them) I judge a friend on how much money they will loan me, how little interest they charge, and how quickly they forget I owe them anything. the best friends do the former in this way: LOTS, LITTLE, VERY QUICKLY. [OK, I am just kidding.] good one Jak. bri :) nice rhyming!

So true....we are defined by our experiences and it really does take time to know who a friend really is. I found myself nodding with agreement at the end of each wise stanza. Beautifully penned Jak...10

Very nice writing. There are old adages for so many circumstances in life. And they usually make a lot of sense and hold much truth. Not many poets write about them, so this was refreshing to read.
