The Medic Poem by Alex Cairnie

The Medic

She was there with me, it was her touch I needed most
The quiet hero, being never one to boast
Each day a gamble, the odds an unfair stake
For some of us they save, and some the gods they take

In our world they are just 'the medic' no need to know their name
Until your on the losing end, of this old killing game
It's then that you discover, that 'they' are all you crave
For if there was no other, you'd be soon to fill your grave

No names, no introduction, just another face to me
But as the minutes past, more an angel I could see
And at her, all I thought to do was stare
As she performed her act, and with her mouth created life from air

She was there with me, when everything in life I knew was lost
And what effect on her, to risk her own at such a cost
To 'the medics', whom our lives too them we trust
Sometimes unnoticed, but their presence is a must

Too not forget 'the medic', there's a place for her I keep
For she ripped me from the clutch of death, and that great eternal sleep
Hunched across my chest with surgeons strokes and artists flare
Her bold ambition, focused full, too deep to care

In her hand she held my life
In the darkest moment, of my trouble and my strife
And with her talent brought me from the brink
My time was up for sure, all gone in just a blink

She was there with me, when all the light of day began to dim
And all around me, comrades glared with faces grim
Each new the outcome of this awful mess
Another broken pawn, in a bloody game of chess

In my mind I was floating, lifted high upon a breeze
Levitated, held there, as my soul began to freeze
And her, now my god and judge, threw salvation over me
I was returned again, once more I was to be

I thank her time and time again, as I should be gone
But here she kept me, let my life clock carry on
A broken engine, that with her magic now repaired
In equal measure, by her hand that I was spared

She was there with me, when my mind and courage slipped
With raging insults and her will, she dragged me back as my time dipped
And though my life I should have lost, she did not let me then
It was her who kept me here, that fact I'll say again

To you 'the medic', each one of you unique
An individual in a solitary clique
A contribution made, that words cannot explain
All just 'the job', carried out each day the same
