The Lighthouse Poem by Sarah Liz Bowman

The Lighthouse

It really is a beautiful old brick building
If you look too long you get an ominous feeling
Shadows seen from the corner of the eye
Noises in the hall when no one was by
The Lighthouse's story is not a pleasant one
Lets turn back to when it begun

The Lighthouse was built for a retired captain and his new bride
A marriage of convenience with a few secrets to hide
Our dear Captain was not quite right in the head
Always accusing his wife of strange men in her bed
The Wife was a pretty young thing with her head in a book
She fell for the Groundskeeper with just one look

A year after they moved in there was an outbreak of smallpox
The Captain was terrified and doubled the locks
He cloistered himself in the basement for weeks
As the days slowly passed his sanity began to leak
The Wife though concerned for her husband- found solace with the Groundskeeper
Neither of them knowing they would soon meet the reaper

The Captain got his gun and roamed the house
Until he got to the room containing his Groundskeeper and spouse
He then forced them into the basement
Where the Groundskeeper was shot and the wife left to lament
She was left in the basement for three days
While the Captain decided how to make her pay

He drug her outside to the back of the house
She did not beg or cry- she was silent as a mouse
She waited for his guard to drop
Finally the madness would stop
As he pushed her over the cliff she pulled him over as well
Her final words- Goodbye Darling see you in hell

Today the Lighthouse is used mainly for research
There are those who say it is cursed
Things beyond reason madness and death
The place where they took their last breath
The story changes depending on who tells
However you can trust me I know my story well
