The Last Tear Poem by Breana DeHart

The Last Tear

My eyes are fading into...
I cannot see, I cannot run.
I hear moans crying from far away,
I don't understand why i hear these haunting sounds.

I open my eyes to her, daughter
Of someone dying or even dead.
She knows daddy is gone.
She knows daddy may not come home.
Her name is Starr, we name her,
Because she is the light to our darkness.

She runs to me, cries my name,
'Mommy, ' she says, 'I dream of daddy! '
I ask her what happened, and
She begins to fade into her own mind.

'Color runs out of my eyes,
As i stare into the face of the haunted.
War is coming and we know we are dead.
I cannot make out the face of my mate,
He was a good man, John.
For he is blended among the lifeless bodies surrounding me.

Enemies metal fly by me at no speed,
One grazes me and i know,
I am fading into the dark depths of nightmares.
The end is near, and i know i am proud of my time here.
Another metal hits my shoulder,
But i do not fall; I stand hight against my enemy.

I look up and see light raining down a,
Master piece of death and blood.
My command tells me it's time,
I ask what time, he follows, for a quiet slumber.
I nod, even thought nodding is only a gesture of realization.

Knowing my fate is near,
I cross the enemy line and think,
Of fading times while I slash down,
My enemy, my friend, my fellow man.
As I watch the color fade from their skin,
I think of mother and child waiting for me.
I remember their eyes and how their light and
Joy could save us all.

I fall to my knees,
Remembering the passion before today.
I know my wife and child are proud.
I start to cry, but don't know why.
Then i cry to sleep,
While one single remaining tear falls down my ragged skin.
The final tear of life.'
