The Frog And The Tarantula Poem by Stephen Katona

The Frog And The Tarantula

Rating: 5.0

A frog and a tarantula is an unusual pair,
In a hole up a tree they're happy to share.
The dotted humming frog has poisonous skin,
So he's safe from succumbing to his hairy kin.
He protects the spider's clutch of eggs,
From ants attracted to her insect dregs.
There's mutual benefit from this clever deal,
For ants are this frog's favorite meal.
The spider scares the snakes away,
To look elsewhere for their prey.
It's a wonder how this sister and brother,
Have learnt to help one another.
If you want to see these splendid two,
Take a trip to the jungle in South East Peru.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
In Peru the Dotted humming frog (Chiasmocleis Ventrimaculata) and Burrowing theraphosid tarantula (Xenesthis immanis) have developed a mutually beneficial relationship known as mutualism. These 'narrow-mouthed' microhylid frogs have poison glands in their skin which allow them to sit in ant colonies while they feed on the ants. The relationship probably developed as the frogs' poison makes them unpalatable to the spiders and the frogs feed on ants that would otherwise harm the spider's eggs. They quite happily share the same holes in trees. As well as food the frogs gain protection from predators such as snakes, geckos and mantids.

SE Peru is a bit too far.... if one walks (got no car) . And if I sat on a hill of ants.... I'd suffer bites inside my pants.... UNLESS, I too, got a tarantula...., but maybe it's a bad idea. Duh! ! ! Well done poem and interesting poet's note. Thanks. I really enjoyed rhyming, especially eggs/dregs. But rhyming would have been tough in last couplet if they lived in Zambia; you got lucky. To MyPoemList. Bri Welcome back. :)

Thank you Bri, you've succeeded in making me laugh again. I really am lucky they don't live in Zambia. I would recommend putting the frog rather than the tarantula in your pants whilst sat on your hill otherwise you might just be adding to the number of your bites. ;)
