The Echinopsis Poem by Nicco Muegge

The Echinopsis

the shadow of your voice
reminds me of a sweetness i cannot untaste;
the vibrance of your eyes
reminds me of a beauty i cannot unsee;
the memory of your mouth
reminds me of a poem i cannot unwrite.

summer nights, warmed by our affections,
decorated the patterns of our lives back then;
obscure infatuation passed through our glances
and watered the soil of our fervors;
quiet nights made loud with desire as we
enveloped in the bask of our adorations.

how sweet those nights were, you & I
knew of nothing but passion - perhaps no?
autumn arrived, and along with the trees,
your love faded and withered away like the leaves;
how so soon? for a love so ripe, to die
in the palm of my trust more quickly than it bloomed?

now the terror of your voice
wakes me in the night, drenched in sweat and tears;
now the vomitous hue of your eyes
sickens me to the very core of my being;
and now the hideous memory of you
reminds me of what we once had, and what
i shall never find again.
