The Earth Prays For Rain Poem by Daleen Enslinstrydom

The Earth Prays For Rain

The scarlet moon hangs low
over the dust-drenched Africa,
the wind blows strong
and people and animals choke.

The air is dense,
the atmosphere is heavy and pressing,
dust cakes around the mouths of animals
and the earth prays for rain.

Out of the distance the thunders rushes nearer
like a angry buffalo,
wraps the moon in a dark caross
and when the flashes thunder glowing
like the eyes of a wild cat
then the earth answers like a wounded animal,
deep out of her yearning
and there is thunder and flashes light up the sky’s canopy.

Then the rain pours down clattering
like the water of the great Zambezi,
the earth is drenched
and when the clouds dissipate
the air smells sweet of freshly cut grass and watermelon
and the moon once again appears white and pale
