The Darkness Poem by Philip Carter

The Darkness

I look into the darkness
Not knowing what I'll see
The darkness is so very black
I can't see even me
Carefully I take a step
In the hope there is some ground
And it is so very quiet
My heartbeat's the only sound
Which way shall I walk
Nowhere is there light
There is no place to run to
In a panic driven flight
I shout out 'Come help me please
And lead me from this place'
But if anyone was out there
Would I want to see their face?
The dark doesn't usually frighten me
But this place fills me with dread
Is this place my personal hell?
Am I really dead?
