The Darkening Days Of Autumn Poem by bryan wallace

The Darkening Days Of Autumn

The light of life is fading from our world.
The summer's long evening sunlight fades,
Softly - darkening into the dark abyss -
Autumn's evening - dull, dark and dreary -
Lengthening and growing longer by the day.
The equinoctial gales blow hard -
Removing the dying multi-coloured leaves,
Turning trees into dead skeletons.
Summer's living natural beauty fades,
Rose-petaled gardens lose their life-colour.
The cool chilling breath of death -
Can now be felt on the night air -
Killing nature's energetic fresh summer growth.
Cornfields are bare and barren,
Ripe summer fruits drop from the dying trees.

Insects and animals start to go into hibernation
Seeking solace and warmth - preparations for winter.
The dark cold mornings and evenings -
Make us feel sluggish and lazy - summer's vitality -
Gone for now - summer's evening walks exchanged
For a good book and a bottle of cider at the fireside -
The darkness, the cold and soft Autumnal showers
Suddenly make the outdoors less appealling -
The mood levels drop and we go into hibernation too!
Like the field mice and the wild birds - we dread -
The forthcoming barren months of Winter's chill.

But it won't be long - come Christmas and Yuletide feast,
The Winter Solstice will have passed - a New Year beckons.
The dark days of winter will grow lighter by the day.
Slowly but surely the chilling breath of death
Gives way to the warming breath of life as the sun rises higher.
Slowly but surely the world comes back to life -
With the snowdrops and then the daffodils making
An early break for life - decorating the barren landscape -
Rolling out nature's red carpet for the forthcoming Spring.
The trees and the rosebushes re-bud and new life begins,
Freshly sown cornfields show delicate fresh green life,
New-born lambs crop the fresh budding meadow grass.

We can also come out to play again -
In the summer sun's warming rays - full of new plans
And good intentions. The winter hibernation now behind us,
Full of energy and vitality - use it wisely -
Make the most of summer while it's there - The dark days,
Will return, soon enough. Enjoy the bright days -
Survive the dark days - both pass faster than we realise.
