The Damage Is Done Poem by Peter Handlin

The Damage Is Done

Choose your sins wisely
Don't let your emotion run wild
Ignored at my peril
I've been in a mess for a while
Sometimes the heart doesn't understand
Just what it's done
When the soul catches up it's too late
The damage is done

Begging for mercy
I pray at an altar of tears
The good that will do you
Won't get you from that place to here
Living each day
Like it's either my first or my last
Trying and trying
I'll never escape from what's past

It's beyond what I know
To think that love can ever be wrong
But stand in my place
And you'll find what's been there all along
Believe what you will
And you'll live with whatever fate brings
When you can't trust what's true
You really can't trust anything.
