The Crab And The Maiden Poem by Ellen Rose Guilaran

The Crab And The Maiden

The ocean is not a friend
Nor is it a foe
It is a vast waves of emotion
Yearning for me to swim through

A tiny red crustacean skid on the sand
Telling me to follow him
His tiny legs of swiftness
With strands of intuition
Tells me, this crab is worth cooking
I laughed at the thought

For months, have befriended this crab
Exchanging stories of far away
He said he'll transform into a man one day
If I kiss him and show him that I love him too
(But the way he wanted me to be)

In secret, I already loved the crab
He was too fast to fall in love
But I fell harder
More than he could ever know

It was a dangerous preposition
As he'll become one of the crabs and get lost at sea
Washed up on a shore of a new land
With a new maiden he thought he fell in love
But he could not remove the thought of me

I did not tell this crab
That I was a mermaid
But it's pathetic
What of a sea creature who can't swim?
What of a serenading mermaid who sang to him but left her
Every sleepless night dedicated
Washed out the sand of how you left
Gone was the trace of you
I, a foolish mermaid, is willing to drown just to swim to you

Stories are made like these
A fairytale ending in a world we walk
If it's not destiny; then its a choice
It's a bittersweet fairytale
With no promise of convenience

It was never easy to love me
And it was not just to call this love
But it doesn't have to wait for a miracle
We can create the stories ourselves, made for the future of us
