The Colour Of East Berlin Poem by Alfred Andersch

The Colour Of East Berlin

This film
shows
cold extinct streets
in which a few sons
walk about
who have not abandoned
the search
for their fathers

the skin of the spree canal smoulders
and goes out

the gendarmenmarkt
still waits blindly
for the hour when owls flee

for the bird of minerva
does not move its feathers
till dusk

beneath the dead war
there stirs
a rusty
grey
