The Caribbean
My friend is Black,
From the Caribbean.
During our meetings,
We talk of history.
Has heard of F. Douglas,
As well as Uncle Tom.
Not knowing either one,
Is aware that the latter,
Is some curse and insult.
About why he knows not.
I told him about the book,
And an adapted movie…
Looked at me, his eyes red:
'Was he some betrayer?
Sold the black Africans?
And praised the master,
That abused the slaves? '
Time was short, we parted,
Before asking the question:
'What about F. Douglas? '
Must insist, must repeat:
'Do not whine and cry,
Be a freedom fighter,
He is a great role model.'
