The Applause Is Empty Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

The Applause Is Empty

If losing all self-respect is the price
Of fickle fame and fleeting wealth
And if dancing almost naked for all eyes
Was the world's requisite, I'd melt
As fast as ice cube on hot pavement
Sink into nothingness for dire shame
Lose name and face in embarrassment
And I'll never ever be the same.
What lies ahead for those who gain
The world but then would lose their soul?
There's a greater price of eternal pain
And while on earth, an emotional hole
It gnaws the heart with arduous questions
The bitter slap of reality
Pleasing people is self destruction
The happiness hollow, the applause is empty.
