Buffalo, to some
Is apt to succumb
Sadly, few remain
Once king of the plain
Now his future's glum

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM

I call these square poems because they have the same number of syllables per line as there are lines in the poem. For example, a four-line poem would have four syllables per line, and a six-line poem would have six syllables per line.

This poem has five lines, so it has five syllables per line.

Square poems do not have to rhyme, and they do not have to be acrostics.

When Europeans first reached North America, bison by the tens of millions roamed the continent. Most lived on the Great Plains, where several tribes of Native Americans hunted them for meat.
By 1890, fewer than 1,000 of the animals remained. Now protected in parks and preserves, more than 50,000 are alive today.
